As if playing Harvey Milk's boyfriend in the upcoming Gus Van Sant flick weren't proof enough that James Franco is comfortable with Teh Gays, check out this interview where he discusses his "character research" for his role as a gigolo in the little-watched Nicolas Cage flick "Sonny". According to a feature interview at Style.com, Franco befriended a bisexual call boy on Bourbon Street and followed him and one of his colleagues on a three-way "date". The details are pretty steamy for a rising Hollywood type, but we suppose anything goes in the post-Paris Hilton sex tape world ...

Guy Ritchie had his work cut out organizing a 50th birthday bash for Queen Of Pop Madonna. Planning a shindig for the dance floor veteran must be like throwing a garden party for the other Queen.

But the Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels director made sure it was one his missus wouldn’t forget on Saturday night by making an emotive speech that helped dispel rumours the couple are on the brink of splitting.

Guy got up in front of 90 of his wife’s pals at the Volstead nightclub bash in London’s West End and paid tribute to her amazing career.

He spoke of his pride at being her husband before adding: “She looks better now than she ever has done. I’m so proud. I love her so much.”

And just in case there were any dry eyes left in the house, Madge’s daughter Lourdes stepped up to sing. The 11-year-old belted out Never Alone from the musical Fame, proving she could follow in her mum’s giant footsteps if she chooses.

Touched Madge then composed herself enough to say her thanks to friends and family — in a speech that lasted almost 30 mouth-drying minutes.

I’m surprised she had the energy for the speech after a night of dancing — to her own music.

Madge appeared to be using the party as a final run-through for her world tour, which starts in Cardiff on Saturday. She gyrated along to her back catalogue and kids Lourdes, Rocco and David joined in too.

Of the guests at the $200,000 party, 40 were Madonna’s dancers. A friend said: “She loved it when her songs came on. Her dancers were pulling out all the moves, breakdancing around her. It was like a final rehearsal for the tour.”

Entertainment was provided by creepy American magician David Blaine. I suppose it beats a bloke making animals out of balloons.

French touch dominatrix for new Madonna tour

With the help of some of the best of French haute couture, Madonna is to kick off her new "Sticky and Sweet" world tour this week in a slinky dominatrix-style frock coat in black stretch satin designed by none other than Givenchy.

A spokeswoman from the French fashion house said Riccardo Tisci, its designer of three and a half years, had provided not only the frock coat in which the queen of pop will open the tour starting in Cardiff August 23, but also a second outfit.

The outfit for the opening number, worn with a waistcoat and trimmed with jet beads, is influenced by "Gangster Pimp" and "Art Deco", according to the house.

The second outfit breaks with Madonna’s long-running taste for the dominatrix style with a gypsy-style black cape lined in fuschia and a black stretch chiffon dress trimmed with coloured ribbons and coloured metal chains.

Other designers getting a piece of the action for this tour include Tom Ford with suits for the band, Miu Miu and Stella McCartney with footwear, Moschino with sunglasses while there are also other contributions from Yves Saint Laurent, Roberto Cavalli and Jeremy Scott, according to Women’s Wear Daily.

The fashion world has paid tribute to Madonna as she celebrated her 50th birthday — with some of the industry’s greatest designers hailing her a "style icon".

Her ever-changing image has always attracted praise from fashion gurus.

Designers including style duo Dolce & Gabbana - who created the costumes for several of her tours said:

"Working with her is an endless experimentation to gain a perfect result. She’s very demanding, but we’ve learned so much from her."

And Chanel’s creative director Karl Lagerfeld has also wished the singer a happy birthday — insisting she has made a major impact on the style world throughout her career.

He adds, "She is fashion. Her styles are always inspiring. I liked the early looks but she’s even better now. Her personality, her unique strength and will.

That is stronger than just one look. She is beyond looks. She is Madonna."

And French fashion guru Jean Paul Gaultier offers, "She’s the essence of the American dream, professionalism, obsession and ambition."

HAIRDRESSERS Jasmin Mann and Sam Turner are preparing for their biggest gig when they help out at Madonna’s concert in the Millennium Stadium.

The pair, who work at the Vanilla Rooms salon, are part of the pop queen’s styling team, and today, they begin working on the dancers’ hair styles ahead of the show on Saturday.

Madonna is launching her Sticky and Sweet tour in the Welsh capital and the world will be watching as she wows the crowds with her latest routines.

Jasmin, 29, owner of salons in City Road, Roath, and Brandreth Road, Lakeside, said it was her dream job to help create the look her idol wanted.

“I’m a massive Madonna fan. I grew up listening to her songs,” she said.

“My first ever album was the Immaculate Collection. It was scratched to pieces I listened to it so much. I grew up in the late 1980s and early ’90s when she was ruling the world with her music and style.

“I think she is definitely my style icon. I love the way she reinvents herself. She is always on the edge of fashion and emerging trends. She is exceptional – to be always on the curve rather than following others, that’s amazing.”

Jasmin and Sam were given a briefing on Friday about the work they will be doing. But they did not find out until today about what kind of styles they will be working on.

Jasmin said: “It was amazing standing in the dressing room on Friday, knowing it is where Madonna and her dancers will be.

“I love her personal style. She really put her stamp on everything she does. She directs the style team rather than the other way around.

“It’s amazing to think that I will be helping to create the vision she has decided for her dancers and I will be carrying out her instructions.

“She was definitely my fashion inspiration growing up. I’m so excited about this week.”

What disintegrated Madonna and Christopher Ciccone’s relationship — cocaine, Ingrid Casares? A gay brother takes his famous sister down a few pegs and pens the definitive Madonna bio. Unfortunately, he’s not sure they’ll be able to patch things up in the near future

Can we possibly be hungry for more ink about the world’s most famous woman?

Of course. In fact, we’re starving.

If you immediately dismissed Christopher Ciccone’s “Life with My Sister Madonna” (Simon Spotlight, $26) because you suspected it was a publicity vehicle for the lame “Hard Candy” album, think again. The biography is surprisingly candid and depicts a not-so-flattering image of a complex, tenacious and driven woman. But it’s also an intimate portrait that only Madonna’s gay brother could capture.

Some biographers can chronicle all of Madonna’s career moves, collaborations and friendships, but no one — not even Madonna’s other siblings — had Christopher’s access.

For 20 years, 47-year-old Christopher worked for Madonna, first as a backup dancer. But when she started touring and needed help changing costumes, Madonna begged Christopher to take the job. He was someone she could trust seeing her naked. From dresser, Christopher graduated to set designer, interior decorator, photographer and tour director.

For a long time, being a superstar‘s brother was a cool gig — almost as addictive as actual superstardom. But like many of Madonna’s relationships, she and Christopher eventually drifted apart. Overcoming his addiction to superstardom is partly why Christopher wrote “Life with My Sister.” The other part is that Christopher hopes to establish his own identity.

That process is already in development. On Aug. 26, Christopher appears on the debut episode of the new season of “Janice Dickinson Modeling Agency.” Janice moves into a house in Miami where all her models will live, and Christopher has only 24 hours to re-design Janice’s master bedroom, which includes a secret video-surveillance chamber where she can spy on everyone. Christopher also hopes to launch his own reality show.

If you remotely enjoyed “Truth or Dare,” you’ll savor every page of Christopher’s book. It’s so good, Madonna should write her brother a fan letter. “Life with My Sister” is a juicy warts-and-all tapestry: Some stories are embarrassing, but Christopher doesn’t assassinate his sister.

The book could be viewed as a betrayal, but in the pages of The Advocate, Madonna once discussed Christopher’s personal life without permission. And when Christopher confronted her about it, Madonna just said, “What’s the big deal?”

Like the other bios, Christopher chronicles Madonna’s relationships with Sean Penn, Sandra Bernhard, Vanilla Ice, Dennis Rodman, Guy Ritchie and countless others. But the most interesting figure in “Life with My Sister” is Ingrid Casares — the lesbian nightclub impresario, who ditched Sandra Bernhard for Madonna, became Madonna’s best friend and a good friend to Christopher as well. Casares often informed Madonna of Christopher’s growing cocaine use. And if newbie mommy Madonna needed a reason to banish Christopher from the superstar mountaintop, cocaine was the perfect excuse.

Your design career doesn’t have much to do with your sister. If Dallasites wanted to see your furniture, where could we look? Check Bernhardt furniture. Look for the Prague line. There are about seven or eight pieces that I’ve done.

Do you still design for Bernhardt? I do. But they moved into the mid-century modern thing, which I’m not really interested in because it’s already been done a thousand times.

Can you pinpoint a signature quality that’s inherent in both your interior design and your book? I like to do things that are very clear and classic. Things that will hold up in time — that are beyond the moment. And I think the book will do that as well.

Can you jostle your “Madonna on Tour” memory banks — anything interesting ever happen in Dallas? You want to make this interview pertinent to Dallas, huh? The Mansion in Turtle Creek, is that in Dallas?

Yes, it is. That’s where we stayed. I remember it being quite pleasant, actually. But that was years ago. I think we even went out one night in Dallas.

With your sister? I think we all went out — me, her and the dancers. We all went out to some big gay dance club.

The Village Station? It’s possible. That sounds familiar. But that was years ago.

Is Ingrid Casares the true villain in this story? There’s no villain in this story. There are plenty of people who are meddling — what you might call “shape shifters.” A couple of people get more dissected than others — Ingrid is one of them; Guy Ritchie is the other.
Did you read Ingrid as a villain?

She had both your ear and Madonna’s. And like a “Dangerous Liaisons” character, Ingrid new how to get close to Madonna, which meant separating her from the only family member Madonna really trusted. In many ways, there’s that aspect of it. And Ingrid was incredibly good at it.

Despite those things, I have to give Ingrid her props. She got me my first music video, which got me into thinking about film and music videos and into a world that I had never even considered before and one that I really enjoy. And despite whatever her motives might have been, she still did good for me. And I’d give her that credit — and I think I do in the book.
Although, I know she’s not happy about it. [Laughs].

How do you know Ingrid is unhappy? She’s been sending me messages — on other people’s phones. Which is alarming because these people are good friends of mine, and they didn’t realize that she had gotten a hold of their phone numbers. It was a bit disturbing but pretty funny, too.

Do you think readers will assume that your drug use is what ruined your relationship with your sister? I don’t think it had anything to do with it to be honest.

Hearing you say that reminds me of when Courtney Love was shit-faced on that Pamela Anderson roast for Comedy Central. Over and over, Courtney kept slurring that she was sober. Throughout the book you acknowledge your drugs use and that Madonna keeps calling you on it. And you explain that you have a little — just a tiny — cocaine problem. Oh, come on.

For the most part, it was social for me. And it was certainly the crowd I was hanging around with. You either did it, or you didn’t hang around those people. I was fully aware of what I was doing. But I was also aware that had I not hung around late at night after Versace’s memorial …

At some point, I knew that there would be a story here. My thing was really about collecting stories — not necessarily to write. But to just to tell other people because they’re fascinating stories. And all put together, they make a portion of the book.

It’s funny, there’s a small incident with Courtney that I really didn’t remember until after I finished writing the book. And that was a moment where her and I somehow ended up in the office of a restaurant in New York after the MTV Awards. It was a party for Maverick. And I don’t know how we ended up alone, but we did. And we ended up making out. It was kind of disgusting. But I didn’t recall that until much later.

But you don’t have adventures unless get out there and have them. At that point, part of the adventure was doing drugs. I don’t think it’s that big of a deal.

And getting back to your question about our relationship: In my own way, I was subconsciously pulling away from her. It was difficult to envision any other life — one without Madonna. Because for 20 years, that was the only life I had. I knew I had to get out of it. I didn’t try that hard to dissuade her or prove anything to her. I could see where things were heading, and it was time for us to stop. I think she was much more of an addiction to me than the drugs were. That life was more of an addiction than any alcohol or drug I could have taken.

I just watched “Truth or Dare,” and there’s a moment when your dad visits Madonna backstage — you’re in the room too. Madonna immediately makes your dad compliment your stage sets. That’s exactly what a big sister is supposed to do. It was thoughtful, loving and unselfish … Or was that contrived for the cameras? Yeah, it was.

No way. You’re kidding. I’m sorry to tell you…

Look, it just wasn’t her way. You’re expected to do your job properly, and you get paid to do it — even though I didn’t know what I should be making because I had only worked for her. So there was nothing for me to judge it by. But in all the years I worked for her that was the only time — ever in public — that she ever complimented my work. Except for maybe once or twice in a magazine.

I guess I plucked the exact scene to reference. That’s why I was so taken aback when, on the last tour, she dedicated a song to me in Miami — even though it was a backhanded way of doing it.

Rather than saying, “I’d like to dedicate this song to my brother Christopher who is in the audience,” she said, “I’d like to dedicate this song to my brother who is in the audience.”
It was like a dedication — but not really.

Did you send her a copy of the book? No, not personally. I figured she’d find her way through it on her own, or her friends would read it, or [Madonna’s longtime publicist] Liz Rosenberg would read it and tell her what was in it. I’m assuming she’ll read it. I can’t believe she wouldn’t.

If Madonna does read it, do you think she’ll be able to see that it’s a good literary endeavor? Or would her ego only get in the way? The hardest thing for her is going to be is the human stuff. Because of her lack of control over it, number one, and she’s been crafting an image for a long time. And anything that alter that image or take a second look would be considered detrimental.

I hope she can see it for what it is — and not what she expected.

What did she expect? Through my father, I heard what she thought the book was going to be. She thought I was going to tear her apart and destroy her family and talk about her kids. Frankly, that was one of the hardest things for me to understand.

I spent 47 years with this woman, and 20 of them working for her. And she really didn’t know me. She didn’t know me at all. She assumed the very worst possible thing, which was rather disappointing, honestly.

It didn’t set out to destroy her. This book really is my story. And my story includes her a great deal. She was a major part of my life — not just as a sister. I think for someone who’s a fan of hers, they’re getting to see that little bit behind that curtain. And it only brings them closer.

What do your other brothers or sisters think of the book? I don’t know if they’ve read it. They all go about their own lives.

That was the other thing that I wanted to do was to at least give them a small voice because they have no voice at all. And I explain the nature of what it’s like — how you actually have to deal with the fact that your sister is the most famous woman in the world. It’s not something that you can just let go. It’s something you have to deal with.

What is next from this starting point? Probably another book of some kind — not about Madonna. Hopefully there are a couple of scripts that I’ve written. I’d love to direct movies — one about a female bullfighter. There’s a young singer I’ve been managing, Julian, who I think is incredibly talented. And I have some experience there, and why not use it and try to give back to somebody to help somebody out, if I can.

The Janice [Dickinson] thing — the TV stuff — I’ve been developing a design-based reality show with Freemantle, the production company that does Janice’s show. It’s not your basic design show, it’s pretty off the wall and raw. It’s not polished — you sort of get the nuts and bolts and nitty gritty of what it really takes to do those kinds of shows. There’s tons of ideas floating around my head. I’d love to do something on Broadway.

What if Madonna asked you to design a new set for her old “family ties” song, “Keep it Together” — what do you think that image would look like? That’s a difficult question. I couldn’t tell you right now. I don’t think there is a picture. I think her and I have some distance to go before we get back together so we can form another relationship together that’s honest and respectful as equals. We’ll see.

Does the book give the impression that you’re too bruised from the relationship? Or deep down, are you brothers and sisters who in 10 years will be able to high-five and laugh at each other — or is that just impossible? It’s not that it’s impossible.

You have to understand that Madonna by nature isn’t that kind of a person. She was never really a buddy. Her only real buddy was Ingrid. She wasn’t the kind of person you sat around and shot the shit with. She was pretty much all work and very little play. I don’t have that relationship with her.

I can hang and talk with my other brothers and sisters. Madonna is more difficult, and she’s always been that way. That’s not something that fame changed. She was always that way, even growing up.

You don’t lavish too much praise about your sister’s work. When it comes to her poisonous celluloid acting, your criticism is rather astute and not unnecessarily harsh. So what do you think of her latest album — especially compared to all her post “Ray of Light” work? It’s disappointing.

Thank you! Here’s my feeling about the music: You get to a certain point. You don’t need the money. You have the world of music and art at your fingertips. Be experimental. Go and do something off the wall — outside of the envelope. Go experiment and explore. What is this doing to Justin Timberlake’s music? I don’t get it. What is the point?

You have woken the sleeping giant. [Laughs]. I don’t understand it. I really don’t. And that video [“Four Minutes to Save the World”] gives me the creeps. If she were 20 years younger, it might be okay. But it’s just weird — for me. Other people seem to like it. But I find it difficult to watch.

Recent paparazzi photos of your sister haven’t been flattering. She looks tired. Does your brotherly instinct kick in? Are you worried? I do worry. But I also know she’s rehearsing her tour. And it’s a long day for a good four or five months. And it’s exhausting. On top of that, she works out. Plus, she has children, and the band, and she’s probably got about 10 to 15 dancers and a thousand other things to deal with. It’s exhausting. I get it. I’ve been where she is — we’ve both been there. She does look particularly more tired than normal. I’d say there’s a lot more pressure right now: She’s turning 50, her children have developed their personalities …

When you saw the pictures, did you think it might be because of your book? No. I don’t think so. I don’t believe that. I think there’s other stuff going on. I don’t know if I care to speculate on what they are. I think there’s more to it than that. I don’t think she’s incredibly happy right now. And it’s unfortunate. And I feel bad for her — I do feel for her. The press coverage she’s been getting lately hasn’t been pleasant.

Plus, they’re going to choose the nastiest photograph they could find. And it looks like she’s coming out of rehearsal, so I would expect her to be exhausted.

You should send her the book and inscribe a loving brotherly message. Maybe she’ll come down a few pegs and y’all could meet halfway. That would be nice. But again, like I said, it’s in her nature to be civil. And I think we can manage that at some point. Whether or not we can get to a place where we can call on the phone and just sort of chat with each other — but we never really did that anyway.

She better make a guest appearance on your reality show. Somehow I doubt that’s going to happen.

A Model Marriage

So two models from Oxygen-TV's Janice Dickinson Modeling Agency are getting hitched. Season three's Paul "Fashionista" Anderson, the tall, blond Midwesterner, and Shaun "Yo Yo" McCarron, the tall, darker Southerner, are having a ceremony in November in Bora Bora Boring. What's actually not dull about this story is the wedding picture they've sent out with invitations. No, Hearsay didn't get an actual invitation -- who in their right mind would invite Hearsay to such a high-minded event? But Hearsay did manage to get its grubby little hands on the goods. That's the pic on the right, with the grooms-to-be wearing little -- but at least they're in white! What's especially odd is how uncanny this pic looks like the "official wedding" pic that Hearsay's own parents sent out when they got married. In fact, the only difference is that Hearsay's parents' pants had pleats. But what is that in Paul's pants? He either carries a banana with him at all times (because you never know when you'll come face to face with an angry chimpanzee) or he's just really, really happy to be held by Shaun....

A year after she bombed onstage at the MTV Video Music Awards, Britney Spears snagged three nominations for this year's show, including the coveted Video of the Year prize.

Thanks to thousands of fans' votes, her video for "Piece of Me" will also vie for Best Female and Best Pop Video honors - giving her 16 nominations over her career.

Such kudos were unimaginable a year ago, when Spears' attempt at a comeback during the awards show backfired miserably.

Her sloppy, lip-synched performance of "Gimme More" was universally panned and ushered in a year of lousy luck for the pop icon, including a failed child custody battle and a stint in rehab.

"Britney Spears made last year's MTV Video Music Awards a memorable one with her performance of 'Gimme More' - albeit in ways she may not have intended," MTV wrote on its Web site yesterday. "But on Sept. 7, Spears will get a chance at VMA glory."

It's unclear whether the pop princess will make an encore performance at the 25th annual show, giving her a chance at redemption.

The only confirmed performers are Jonas Brothers, Lil' Wayne and Kid Rock, but a spokeswoman for the network said earlier this week that Spears is in negotiations to take the stage again.

Spears is also showing that she has a sense of humor about her infamous performance.

In promos for the show, a trim and dolledup Spears mindlessly banters with host Russell Brand as a 9,000-pound pachyderm walks behind them - signaling that last year's lousy act is the elephant in the room.

Spears is always a ratings juggernaut on the program. She seems determined to raise eyebrows whenever she appears on the show - including in 2003, when she and Christina Aguilera exchanged kisses with Madonna while performing "Like a Virgin."

There was a massive cake, an extravagant buffet, expensive champagne and rap poets performing a special message to a Birthday Girl who was draped in gold jewellery - but a curious absence of showbiz friends.

Madonna failed to hide her dismay as her closest celebrity pals, including Gwyneth Paltrow and Stella McCartney, snubbed her £100,000 50th birthday party at the swanky Volstead nightclub in London's Mayfair on Saturday night.

It was left to husband Guy Ritchie, 39, daughter Lourdes, 11, sons Rocco, eight, and David, two, around 50 of her dancers and some work colleagues to toast her half century.

In a 40-minute speech to her 90 guests, Madonna thanked Guy, her children and her Kabbalah religion, before admitting: "I'm really disappointed.

"There are a lot of people who are not here tonight, but thanks to everyone who did make it.

"I can't believe I have reached half a century. It only happens once and this is an event I'm glad to be sharing with you."

After a rapturous round of Happy Birthday, Lourdes left her mum teary-eyed by playing a song from Fame on the grand piano as a surprise.

Guy, who helped organise the party, had spared no expense. The buffet, on tables adorned with roses and candles, included kosher-prepared Wagyu beef, foie gras and caviar, all washed down with £450 bottles of Krug Rose champagne, martinis, "Crackbaby" cocktails and mojitos. Dominating the display was a three-tiered chocolate, raspberry and vanilla birthday cake covered in silver balls and crystallised rose petals.

Guy also made a speech, telling his missus: "Out of all your years, you look your most beautiful." But he couldn't resist pointing out that most of Madge's guests worked for her. And he refused to join her on the dancefloor, which had a huge 'M' in the middle.

Weirdly, he had also spent the entire day working. He had organised a private screening for industry critics of his movie RocknRolla at the National Film Theatre on London's Southbank.

A source said: "It was as if he was trying to make a point by not being at her beck and call."

Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi have tied the knot.

"Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi were married tonight in an intimate ceremony at their home in Los Angeles," their spokesperson tells PEOPLE exclusively.

DeGeneres, 50, and de Rossi, 35, both wore Zac Posen and exchanged rings by Neil Lane during the Saturday ceremony. Their big day also featured arrangements by L.A. florist Mark's Garden.

The intimate ceremony was attended by 19 guests, including DeGeneres's mom Betty and de Rossi's mother Margaret Rogers (who flew in from Australia for the occasion), who witnessed the couple exchange handwritten vows.

The couple have been dating since December 2004. DeGeneres announced her plans to wed de Rossi during a taping of her talk show in May after California's Supreme Court ruled a previous ban on gay marriage to be unconstitutional.

The following month de Rossi showed off a 3-carat diamond ring set on a pink pavé band DeGeneres presented to her for their upcoming nuptials when the pair attended the Daytime Emmy Awards together.

"She's taught me lessons about myself, and I feel like I've taught her," the TV host said of de Rossi last year. "We've both changed and grown, and we just feel like, 'Oh, okay, this is completion.'"

Michael Phelps capped the greatest Olympic performance in history this morning in Beijing, winning an eighth gold medal in a decisive American victory in the 4x100-meter medley relay. With the eighth gold, the 23-year old American eclipses Mark Spitz's record of seven set at the 1972 Munich Games.

It looked dicey until Phelps turned after his first 50 fly but, just as last night, Phelps left the field in his wake on the second. Jason Lezak held off world record holder Eamon Sullivan on the last 100.

Now that Phelps has delivered on the massive hype that accompanied his quest for history, it will be easy to overlook how remarkable his accomplishment was. Don't fall into that trap. Phelps swam 17 races in three disciplines at three different distances. He bested specialists who focused all their training toward one event. It's the most remarkable achievement in Olympic history. History will judge where Phelps belongs in the all-time athletic pantheon, but at this point it's not ridiculous to mention him in the same breath as Ruth, MJ and Tiger.

Also, important; don't forget about Jason Lezak. Without his remarkable anchor leg in the 4x100 freestyle relay -- the best swim I've ever seen -- and his excellent anchoring tonight, we'd be talking about Phelps having another stellar, but relatively disappointing, meet.

The biggest accomplishment for Phelps might not be the eight golds, or the seven world records or the $1 million bonus from Speedo. The greatest feat for Phelps was that, for one week, he turned everyone in America into a swim fan. People who couldn't tell you the breaststroke from the butterfly were hanging on each of his races, cheering on Phelps like they were lifelong fans.

Such is the nature of the Olympics, I suppose; people become fans of a sport that they won't care about again for another four years. But Phelps was different. He became a national phenomenon. He became a part of the conversation. America might not care about swimming until the next Olympics, but they won't soon forget Michael Phelps.

The couple were all smiles as they headed into the venue, with protective Guy holding onto his wife's arms.

On August 16th, Madonna turns 50. She is still young — 50 is the new 25! — but perhaps because she has been a megastar since she was 25, it seems as if she is 80. Remember the famous H. Rider Haggard book (and later an Ursula Andress movie) She? That’s how we think of Madonna — thousands of years old, renewing herself by walking through the magic fire. I think human sacrifice was involved, too. (Well, if you believe her brother Christopher …)

Not since Marlene Dietrich became the "World’s Most Glamorous Grandmother" have I seen such fret and fuss about a star’s age. (Miss Dietrich, who never saw a publicity angle she didn’t love, was initially amused by the glam granny references. Later, as the business of putting "Marlene Dietrich" together became more labor intensive, she was less cheery about it.)

Of course, with every round-numbered birthday that Madonna has passed — 30, 40 – the press has asked, "Is Madonna the Material Girl Now Immaterial? Is She Still Relevant?" The answer is f— yeah, she’s still relevant. When you don’t ask, she’ll be gone. There has always been an unseemly media haste to put an end to maturing female careers, especially when that career is based, at least in part, on good looks or sex appeal.

Truth to tell, Madonna’s record sales are not quite what they once were in the United States, but in Europe she sells three times as many CDs. Ticket sales for her coming U.S. and European concert tour remain stratospheric. (This ongoing aspect of her career is very much like that of the withered Rolling Stones and nobody is bothering to diss their crow’s-feet!)

Madonna is too thin, too worked-out and her hair is way too long. But these are the choices she makes. It doesn’t photograph well. In person — and I have seen her in person without makeup recently — she looks softer, younger and prettier. Not so unappealingly muscular.

People ask me, as Madonna’s birthday approaches, if I have advice for her? Puh-LEEZE. I wish she had some advice for ME. I’d like 600 million dollars.

As a friend, I’d only suggest she relax. As a friend, she’d probably reply, "I will when you will, Liz!" (Several years ago, my newspaper, the New York Post obliged me to ask Madonna if she was ever going to retire? She laughed and said, "Are you?" End of subject.)

Madonna, you keep on keeping on as long as you want. Happy birthday, honey!

Oh, and here are a few other stars who reach the half-century mark this year — Michael Jackson, Prince, Angela Bassett, Kevin Bacon, Ellen DeGeneres, Sharon Stone, Candace Bushnell and Tim Burton.

But as far as the press is concerned, it’s All About Madonna.

A DIAMOND necklace and earrings worth $500,000 was a fitting present for the Material Girl as Madonna celebrated her 50th birthday yesterday.

Madonna's film director husband, Guy Ritchie, reportedly splashed out on the specially-designed gifts from Bulgari as well as naming a rose after his wife and putting in a vegetable patch for her.

After a rough few months in which the couple fended off rumours that their eight-year marriage is on the rocks, Ritchie appears to have gone all out for her big day.

Some of her other gifts were less appealing. No doubt unsure about what to buy a woman who has everything, friend Justin Timberlake is said to have resorted to golf gift vouchers.

One unwanted present came from her brother, Christopher Ciccone, who sent flowers in a bid to make up for his tell-all book Life With My Sister Madonna, The Mirror reported.

Various media outlets sent birthday cakes to her home in Marylebone, central London.

One present sure to win her over, however, was a dress designed by daughter Lourdes, 11.

Madonna's big day was otherwise kept low-key, with a spokeswoman confirming only that the star was in Britain.

A huge party planned at her Wiltshire Estate was expected to be cancelled after she suffered an ankle injury.

Instead she was due to have an intimate gathering of family and friends.

Madonna is listed in Guinness World Records as selling 120 million albums and 40 million singles to earn the title of the most-successful female solo artist.

Her Sticky And Sweet world tour kicks off on August 23 in Cardiff.

The pop star, who is turning 50 Saturday, is one of fashion’s great chameleons. She’s been a punk princess and lady of the manor. She has channeled Marilyn Monroe, Eva Peron and a geisha.
The whole underwear-as-outerwear trend? That came from Madonna. Not to mention those ’80s blondes who proudly showed their roots while wearing lace gloves and lots of chains. And would Kabbalah and yoga as lifestyle trends be where they are today without her?

‘‘She’s become an adjective. Friends will go shopping with each other and say, ‘It’s so Madonna.’ That’s what you want in fashion,’’ says stylist and TV commentator Robert Verdi.

Lately Madonna has mostly been spotted in workout gear, perhaps in preparation for her ‘‘Sticky & Sweet’’ world tour that will be partially outfitted by Givenchy. Designer Riccardo Tisci has worked up two outfits: a frock coat in black stretch satin and a long cape worn over a black dress embellished with colored ribbons — for a Gypsy-inspired outfit.

It’s hard to say if the Gypsy look will start another trend. The cone-front corset Jean Paul Gaultier created for her Blond Ambition tour in 1990 didn’t fully catch on with the masses.

But whether her looks are influential or merely memorable, Madonna always finds a way to connect with people and she never wears a look long enough for it to become stale, observes Verdi. If the disco revival look of her ‘‘Hung Up’’ era in 2005 clicked with him, her cowgirl-hat days in 2000 spoke to someone else.

Britney Spears leaves the Little Door restaurant and then goes shopping with a friend at Intermix on Robertson Blvd, followed by a large group of fans and paparazzi on Tuesday.

Brit is reportedly lined up to play a lesbian stripper in Quentin Tarantino’s next movie. She would star as psycho dancer Varla in a remake of the 1965 cult film Faster Pussycat! Kill Kill!

A source said, “Quentin is convinced Britney will be brilliant. She’s delighted. She thinks it could turn her career around.

“It is perfect Tarantino material. He wanted to get Britney first. She’s playing the most important character.”

Most people are lucky to work with Madonna once. Costume designer Arianne Phillips has lasted 11 years, from the singer’s Pre-Raphaelite look for “Ray of Light” to the urban cowgirl of “Music” to the Patty Hearst look of “American Life” and on and on and on. In other words, measured in Madonna time, Phillips is roughly 77 years old.

Still, La Ciccone’s upcoming “Sticky and Sweet” tour has had its own unique challenges for her longtime stylist. “Normally we prep in April and May, and open in June,” says Phillips. “This time, the tour begins in August. It’s a nightmare. Everyone in Italy and France is on a beach sunning themselves.”

Thankfully, everyone is a bit of an exaggeration, as Phillips goes on to detail a mile-long list of willing collaborators and everything they’ve designed for the trek, which begins Aug. 23 in Cardiff, Wales, and comes to the United States in early October. Givenchy’s Riccardo Tisci designed two outfits, while Tom Ford provided bespoke suits for the band. Three pairs of shoes have been custom-made by Miu Miu, there are thigh-high boots courtesy of Stella McCartney, sunglasses from Moschino, and other outfits and odds and ends from Yves Saint Laurent, Roberto Cavalli, and Jeremy Scott.

Like her shows in the past, this tour will be divided into four sections. The first references gangsta pimp and Art Deco with Givenchy costumes. This, it would seem, is Madonna’s current take on her longest-running fashion inspiration — the dominatrix. “It’s a theme that runs throughout her career” Phillips says. “She’s not afraid of being hard.” The second section has been termed “Old School,” and harkens back to Madonna’s early days in New York, with Scott’s outfit and some vintage prints from Keith Haring, the late graffiti artist and friend of Madonna who died of AIDS in 1990. “He and Madonna were friends. If her were alive, it would be his 50th birthday as well. So I thought, ‘What if we revisited that?’” Afterward, there’s a gypsy section with more costumes from Givenchy. “Riccardo’s a new young talent. If you look at Madonna’s history with fashion, that makes him an obvious choice.” Finally, there’s a futuristic rave section with lots of Japanese influences.

And while The New York Times complained recently about Madonna’s style choices, Phillips says getting older has had little effect on her sense of fashion adventure. “She always wants to push the envelope. There are no vanity considerations based on her age.” As Phillips adds seconds later, “She looks good in everything.”

Madonna heads home to show new film

Pop superstar Madonna has returned to her Michigan roots to introduce her new documentary at a film festival.

I Am Because We Are was shown at the Traverse City Film Festival, which was co-founded by filmmaker and fellow Michigan native Michael Moore.

Hundreds of fans cheered as Madonna, wearing a black dress, high heels and sunglasses, stepped out of a 4x4 vehicle in front of the State Theatre. She hugged a waiting Moore and posed for photos with him.

Madonna and Moore shared the stage at the theatre before a screening of the movie, which deals with the orphans of Malawi, the African nation where she and husband Guy Ritchie adopted a son.

"It's great bringing my movie to a place that I feel familiar," Madonna told the audience. "Not like the Cannes Film Festival, where nobody's speaking English, or the Tribeca Film Festival, where no one sits down.

"There's something poetic about coming back to the place where I used to come for holidays - camping trips with my dad and stepmother and my very large family," said the 49-year-old singer, who was born to the southeast in Bay City and raised in the Detroit suburb of Rochester Hills.

Madonna was accompanied by her 11-year-old daughter, Lourdes, and the film's director, Nathan Rissman. Ritchie was not present.

Moore, who won an Oscar for his 2002 documentary Bowling For Columbine, said he was humbled to be able to call Madonna a friend.

"She has such an incredible heart and such a generous spirit," he said. "She does so much out of the glare of the lights to make the world a better place."

Madonna had praise of her own for Moore, 54, a native of the economically downtrodden Flint, Michigan, who also has a home near Traverse City.

Madonna to Perform Live at New York's Roseland Ballroom -- April 30th

In celebration of the release of Madonna's upcoming CD 'HARD CANDY,' Control Room, MSN and Verizon Wireless will present the one and only Madonna live at New York's famed Roseland Ballroom on Wednesday evening, April 30th, it was confirmed today by Warner Bros. Records. The Control Room-produced show will be available live on MSN Music In Concert (www.music.msn.com) on April 30th in the US and on May 15th ex-US.

Verizon customers will be amongst the handful of lucky winners who will attend the show. Other lucky fans will need to line up outside of Roseland to receive tickets on a first come basis. This special event will be the first time Madonna will debut songs from her hotly anticipated new album 'HARD CANDY' which is scheduled to arrive in stores on April 29th.

The first single from the album, '4 Minutes' has already jumped to the Number One spot in many countries. The song, which features Madonna, Timbaland and Justin Timberlake was produced by Justin Timberlake and Timbaland.

Steven Klein (born 1961) is an American photographer based in New York. After studying painting at the Rhode Island School of Design, he moved into the field of photography. Klein shot high-profile advertising campaigns for various clients including Calvin Klein, D&G, Alexander McQueen and Nike and is a regular contributor to magazines including American and French Vogue, i-D, Numéro, W and Arena. His work has featured in numerous exhibitions, most recently at the Gagosian Gallery, California and the Brancolini Grimaldi Gallery in Florence. Klein is well known for his W Magazine editorials with Madonna [1], Tom Ford[2], Brad Pitt[3] and numerous others. He often works with Lighting Director David Devlin.
